INTD7332 PROJECT 1 – INTERIOR DESIGN COLLAB

Project Overview

Interior Design Collab – when the third and second years collaborate to develop creative and innovative ideas. The Bookery is a South African brand that restores under privileged schools with libraries and librarians to expand on opportunities for creativity and education. It’s important for education to reach locations where there’s children and poverty so that there can be change, and a better life ahead for many families around South Africa. The Bookery provides at least one facilitator/librarian for every library that they start for maintenance purposes.

Problem Statement

Design a library for The Bookery’s, our new client. Be sure to include closed storage for valuables and a collaborative learning and reading space. This prefab is not only a library, but also a classroom.

The Bookery mentioned that there’s one librarian provided for every project. This information lead us as a team to conceptualize different options for full height storage solutions for books and valuables, different desk/seating options for the librarian and internet accessibility. The client also did give a suggestion to use trapezium-shaped desks for modular purposes, which we modularized further by breaking the trapezium shape into three equilateral triangles. The bookshelf heights are at 1200mm above FFL, the chairs are at standard student height and the whiteboard and blackboards reach a total height of 2000mm. The chalkboards are elevated from 60mm above FFL.

The hexagon cushions were designed for and are stacked onto the central seating space, which serves as a ‘reading book’ but also serves as storage. Initially I thought about elevated seating areas, but with a space as small as this it was not worth it.

The recommendation of trapezium-shaped desks also turned into the formation of hexagons, which became a major design characteristic throughout the space which supports the idea of ‘collaborative busy bees’. The hexagon shape was enforced
